California’s iconic beach: Santa Monica

Santa Monica Beach, located in the city of Santa Monica, is one of California’s iconic beaches. Hundreds of tourists visit it every year, and it is a frequent setting for film productions. Its palm trees, white sand, pier, amusement park, and surrounding restaurants make it one of the most visited places in California, thanks to its proximity to the city of Los Angeles.

What can you do in Santa Monica?

  • Ride bicycles or scooters
Rentals range from about 5 to 12 dollars, and if you want a guided tour, prices can reach from 60 to 89 dollars.
  • Go surfing
Certain sections of the beach have surfable waves. You can do it on your own for free, or you can pay an instructor to teach and accompany you.
Prices for surf lessons range from about 395 to 1,000 dollars. If you need gear and a board, there are companies that rent them.
  • Play volleyball
It’s free—just get a ball and enjoy the California sand.
  • Play soccer on the beach
No payment required, just pick a spot you like and start playing.
  • Bodyboarding
This is another popular sport in Santa Monica—young people with small boards floating on the ocean surface.
  • Sunbathing
Sitting or lying on the sand is one of the free pleasures in Santa Monica.
  • Ride the attractions at Pacific Park
Prices range from about 8 to 15 dollars per ride; you can visit the website for more information.
  • Fishing
No fee is required. You just need to bring your fishing rod and choose a spot on the pier.
  • Boating
Most companies offering this service charge from about 140 to 400 dollars and up to 1,000 dollars, depending on the company you choose.

Is the water at Santa Monica beaches warm or cold?
The water is cold. In winter that may not encourage swimming, but during summer it becomes a refreshing escape from the area’s heat.

Where to eat?
The area has a wide range of dining options—from street vendors selling hot dogs and snacks, food stands on the pier, fast-food chains, and mid-range restaurants with prices from 20 to 30 dollars, to the most upscale places where an average dish costs over 80 dollars.

How to get to Santa Monica?
Since it is a neighboring city to Los Angeles, getting there is not complicated. You can arrive by bus, train, or car. Late at night, train and bus service decreases compared to daytime hours, but they still run. The fare is 1.75 dollars per trip.

Route 1 — From Downtown Los Angeles

Step by step

Start at a central station (for example, 7th Street / Metro Center or Pico Station).

Take the Metro E Line light rail (formerly Expo Line) toward Santa Monica / Downtown Santa Monica.

This line goes directly from downtown to Downtown Santa Monica Station.

Approximate travel time: ~45–60 min.

Get off at the last station: Downtown Santa Monica (4th / Colorado).

Walk to the Santa Monica Pier:

Head west along Colorado Ave toward Ocean Ave and cross the pier bridge.

Walking time: ~8–10 min from the station.

Summary

Direct Metro E Line train from downtown.

Short walk from the final station to the beach and the pier.

Route 2 — From LAX Airport

At LAX the direct train does not yet reach inside the terminals, but you have efficient public transportation with transfers.

Step 1 — From your LAX terminal

Take the free airport shuttle to the LAX/Metro Transit Center station (signed as “Metro Shuttle” or “PINK LAX Shuttle”).

This connects you to buses and trains at no extra cost.

Step 2 — From LAX/Metro Transit Center

You have two options using public transportation:

Option A: Direct bus (Big Blue Bus)

2A. Board Big Blue Bus Route 3 toward Santa Monica / Downtown Santa Monica.

This bus will take you near the 4th Street / Colorado Ave area (the heart of Santa Monica).

Arrival: near the Third Street Promenade / Pier.

Approximate travel time: ~60–75 min from LAX.

3A. Walk 8–10 min to the Pier (from where the bus drops you off).

Option B: Train combination + short bus or walk

2B1. From LAX/Metro Transit Center, take a light rail train heading northwest (Metro K Line or similar) to connect with the Metro E Line.

2B2. Transfer to the Metro E Line toward Downtown Santa Monica.

Get off at Downtown Santa Monica Station.

2B3. Final 8–10 min walk to the Pier.

This train route may take longer depending on connections, but it avoids bus traffic if schedules line up well.

Useful Tips

Use a TAP card to pay fares on Metro and Big Blue Bus (easier than paying cash).

Buses and trains have different schedules depending on the day and time (not all run all night).

Plan ahead with apps like Transit or Metro Trip Planner to see real-time schedules.
